12 Tips for Success in Real Estate Pre-Licensing
Real estate school is an exciting first step toward a new career but like anything worth doing, success comes down to how you show up and prepare. At Central Delaware Real Estate Academy, we’ve seen what helps students thrive, pass their exams, and feel confident stepping into the industry.
In the spirit of the holiday season, here are 12 tips to help you get the most out of real estate school, whether you’re currently enrolled or planning to join a future class.
12 Tips for success in real estate pre-licensing.
1. Consistency Beats Cramming
Studying a little at a time, consistently, will always outperform last-minute cramming. Even 30–45 minutes a day helps your brain retain information and reduces stress as exam days approach.
2. Learn the “Why,” Not Just the Answer
Real estate isn’t about memorizing facts. It’s about understanding how things work. When you focus on why a rule, formula, or process exists, the answers come more naturally on both the exam and in real life.
3. Ask Questions, Early and Often
Your instructors are there to help. If something doesn’t make sense, ask. Chances are someone else has the same question, and clearing up confusion early prevents bigger issues later.
4. Your Study Environment Matters
Choose a consistent, distraction free place to study. A quiet space with good lighting and minimal interruptions helps your brain shift into “learning mode” more quickly and effectively.
5. Use Note Cards to Study From Your Books
Flashcards are one of the most effective study tools. Writing out definitions, formulas, and key concepts helps reinforce memory and makes review easy.
6. Become a Vocabulary Victor
Real estate has its own language. The sooner you master the terminology, the easier every chapter becomes. Strong vocabulary skills can make the difference between guessing and confidently answering exam questions.
7. Do the Homework Assigned
Homework isn’t busy work, it’s practice. The assignments are designed to reinforce what you’re learning in class and highlight areas that may need extra attention.
8. Find a Study Group and Get Plugged In
Studying with others keeps you accountable and exposes you to different ways of thinking through material. Teaching a concept to someone else is one of the best ways to learn it yourself.
9. Do the Practice Questions
Practice questions help you understand how material is tested and how questions are worded. The more you practice, the more confident you’ll feel walking into the exam.
10. Repetition Is Your Friend
You won’t master everything the first time you see it and that’s okay. Repetition builds confidence. Review notes, flashcards, and practice problems regularly to strengthen retention.
11. Know What Type of Learner You Are
Everyone learns differently. Are you visual, auditory, or hands-on? At CDREA, we offer a learning style assessment to help you study smarter, not harder. If you haven’t taken it yet, reach out, we’re happy to help.
12. Treat Real Estate School Like the Career It’s Preparing You For
Show up prepared. Take it seriously. Build good habits now. The effort you put into real estate school can mirror the success you’ll create in your future career.
